Young Researcher Miguel Gayo Abeleira
Miguel Gayo Abeleira has developed an evaluation of the communications layer of urban microgrids. The best alternative for physical data transmission has been selected for each microgrid application. A communications architecture has been proposed that focuses on providing the scalability and resilience characteristics required by the microgrids. To this end, single points of failure have been eliminated through full decentralisation. This has been achieved through the inclusion of Blockchain technology, which allows the execution of tasks in a fully decentralised manner and guarantees all microgrid users security and traceability in all data exchanges.
As a result of the research carried out in the field of microgrids, major results have been obtained in the form of publications in prestigious journals, among which the following can be highlighted:
- “Addressing Challenges in Prosumer-Based Microgrids With Blockchain and an IEC 61850-Based Communication Scheme”, in the IEEE Access magazine. It addresses the creation of a local energy market through the use of Blockchain and the IEC 61850 communications standard.
- “Aperiodic two-layer energy management system for community microgrids based on blockchain strategy” in the journal Applied Energy. It designs the creation of a two-layer strategy that allows the integration of local energy markets in different areas of community microgrids and, based on the results of these markets, optimises the electricity grid to favour energy flows and reduce the amount of energy exchanged with the main grid.
He is currently working as R&D Engineer at Smarkia.
