Objective 3

Energy recovery in rail transport networks and their integration in urban microgrids

Milestone 3.1. Improving energy efficiency for electrified DC rail systems

Tasks

  • Development of an electrical infrastructure simulator for DC railway systems including energy storages and reversible substations
  • Modelling of realistic traffic scenarios to obtain a representative range of real-life phenomena associated with energy consumption, generation and exchange between trains
  • Modelling of railway lines with complex topology and different types of services
  • Development of an optimisation algorithm to automate the search for optimal infrastructure configurations

Participants: Research Groups GEA-IIT, IMDEA-USE and the companies INDRA, ADIF, RENFE, Iberdrola and Naturgy

Milestone 3.2. Development of microgrids in the railway environment ("railway-microgrids")

Tasks

  • Comprehensive study of converters connected to catenary to generate AC voltages
  • Simulation, stability and analysis of hybrid microgrids (AC-DC) at stations using non-conventional energy sources
  • Development of a meshed catenary power supply system

Participants: Research Groups IMDEA-USE, GEISER, GCP y GEA-IIT, with the participation of ADIF, RENFE, Iberdrola and Naturgy

Milestone 3.3. Smart energy system management

Tasks

  • Urban rail system demand study and modelling
  • Development of demand forecasting tools
  • Management based on predictive demand models

Participants: IMDEA-USE and GHEODE, with the participation of INDRA, ADIF, RENFE, Iberdrola and Naturgy
